Help My Unbelief

A reading for Saturday, April 5, 2014: Mark 9:14-29.

“I believe; help my unbelief!” said the man in search of healing for his son.

Augustine of Hippo famously said, "Therefore do not seek to understand in order to believe, but believe that thou mayest understand."

Often we convince ourselves that the elimination of doubt is our only path to belief. We trust our ability to comprehend God and all the mysteries of faith first, before we can then come to faith.

Perhaps prayer is another path. Prayer does not presuppose anything, only a relationship with God. "I believe; help my unbelief!" It's a good start to the healing and the peace we seek.
