3 O'Clock

A reading for Wednesday, July 30, 2014: Matthew 27:45-54.

At three o'clock in the afternoon Jesus was utterly and completely abandoned...

Jesus cried out "with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Those that stood around watching were strangers, perhaps even still mockers that had come to continue to make fun of those crucified. They do not even understand Hebrew, and thus misunderstand Jesus words thinking he was crying out for Elijah. Anyone that had followed Jesus, or even those from the Jewish faith would not have made such a mistake. Nobody that Jesus knew and counted on as a friend is there in the end. All have abandoned him.

Yet, Jesus was faithful to us even to the end. Even as we abandoned God, God would not abandon us. We may not always understand everything that happens to us, or why. We might not even know very much about faith, but know this... God will never abandon us! No matter what, God is faithful.

God of all mercies, we praise you that you have brought us to this new day, brightening our lives with the dawn of promise and hope in Jesus Christ.
