Many Happy Returns...

A reading for Wednesday, May 20, 2015: Luke 10:17-24.

When those that Jesus sent returned, they were amazed at the power of the Spirit. “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” This is the authority that is given to those that go out in Jesus name under the mission of God.

Jesus reminds the seventy that it is the faithfulness of God in them, and their willingness to go that has enabled them to see the Spirit. The Spirit is at work ahead of them and they get to participate with what God is doing in the world in transforming all of creation. The rich and the powerful are no better off than those that get to participate in the work of the Spirit. Returning with joy is a gift of the Spirit.

This too is the work of the church. The going out as the sent is the work of the church, and the return praising God and sharing the joy of the Spirit is just as much. This is the power of testimony. It is our gift to tell the stories of what God is doing. We gather together and sing our hymns, celebrate our sacraments, and thank God for the blessings we have experienced. This is our many happy returns...

“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!"
