Choosing To See

A reading for Monday, February 22, 2016: Jonah 4:1-11.

Over and over again throughout scripture, we read how men and women like Jonah fail to see the world as God sees the world. We hope for privilege and status for those on our side, while denying others basic human dignity. We want to see limited grace, and judgment on those we disagree with. As the creator God blesses the value of all life, but somehow we aren't able to.

Over and over again, God affords us the chance to be transformed. To open our hearts, to let others in, and to begin to adopt a new way of being. That new way of being comes in our ability to connect with God's way of being.

Perhaps that's one reason why reading scripture and being part of a community of people devoted to God's way of being is so important. We need to be reminded regularly of the way we see the world, and the way God hopes to transform us. It's just harder to do that alone. Faith is better with others. Left to ourselves, mostly we will only see the world through our own eyes.

Faith is a daily choosing to see the world the way God sees it...
