Day to Day Worry?

A reading for Friday, February 19, 2016: Matthew 6:25-34.

Perhaps there is no more relevant message for today. Jesus said, "So do not worry about tomorrow..."

Sure there are lots of things that occupy our minds. It's a Presidential election year. There are dangerous situations in many nations. The rancor and division among us over race and class and creed seems higher than normal. Lots of our friends and family are visibly upset and some even acting out.

Yet, we belong to the Lord and with that comes a different way of life. We are called to declare peace! We are tasked to bring peace. That peace sometimes comes simply from living a joyful life, with the abundance that can only come from God. Jesus said, "Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" Can others see that in you? Do your friends and family know that you believe that you are valued by the Lord our God?

Today we begin the services that will lay to rest Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Surely he was no slack when it came to living a purposeful and meaningful life. His mark on the court and our nation will last for a long time. Yet, his relationship with the other justices, especially arch rival Ruth Bader Ginsburg, are legendary. The way he enjoyed his family and his friends... Good food... Good wine... A good joke, sometimes even from the bench... These are also his lasting legacy. In the midst of important work, it seems Scalia never forgot to be loving and joyful.

Sometimes we take ourselves far too seriously. The world is still a good place, and if we look around I bet we have some blessings to celebrate. Perhaps we need a reminder sometimes in the midst of our day to day worry. Our God has been, is, and will continue to be faithful and good to us. Jesus said, "Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
